![]() ![]() In Warhammer III, you can choose from seven factions (eight if you preordered). Playing as different factions meant adopting new tactics, understanding divergent underlying mechanics to grow civilizations, and satisfying disparate goals to achieve victory. Stirring magic into the mix invigorated the series with elves, goblins, dwarves, undead hordes led by vampires, and abominations from the chaos realm, alongside human factions echoing chivalrous knights or Vikings. The fantasy world of Warhammer freed Total War from the limitations of historical accuracy and Warhammer II was a game you could play forever. The chance to rewrite history was tantalizing, but the tactics and military units employed by different nations often came to feel very much the same. I even watched Time Commanders, a strange TV show where historians (with little to no experience of video games) reenacted famous Roman battles in the game that became Rome: Total War. I have fought for the glory of Rome, unified China, and led Napoleon to victory in Europe. The Total War series captivated me at inception with Shogun: Total War back in 2000. Veterans will feel right at home with this blend of real-time battle and turn-based strategy, but there is an excellent tutorial to refresh your memory and arm newcomers with the knowledge they need to march into battle. The scale of this game is incredible, with a campaign map that dwarfs its predecessors, new playable factions with different styles, and a compelling narrative that weaves in your aged Advisor and his Tome of Fates. ![]() This latest entry (available on PC and Xbox Game Pass) hosts the usual struggle for dominance between disparate factions-some familiar, some new-but for the first time, we must rally our troops and lead them into the Chaos Realm to face horrors that will challenge their very sanity. Total War: Warhammer III is the culmination of the finest strategy series ever made, and this is a hill I am willing to die on. They are ready to flee-until my ice queen charges into the melee atop a roaring war bear, unleashing spells that freeze our enemies. When the demon flies overhead, diving to attack from behind, my soldiers waver. My terrified frontline is already giving ground as this monstrous force drives up the slope. Arrows, spears, and axes rain down upon impervious scales and gleaming armor. A horde of grotesque beasts and slavering monsters led by an impossibly huge, flying horned demon wielding a flaming sword threatens to sweep my army away. ![]()

![]() It is, however, meant as a reminder that capitalism does produce market failures at times. Finishing Why the Dust Bowl HappenedĪlthough I’m sure some readers will choose to think so, this blog post isn’t truly meant to convince readers that capitalism is awful. The states of the Great Plains have been losing population relative to the rest of the US ever since. The American Way that had seemed so perfect in 1919 now seemed a complete failure. Scorching heat combined with little rain and high winds to create dust storms of a consistency and magnitude almost unimaginable. All that remained was for the Great Plains to hit a drought that also featured high winds.īy the mid-1930s this is what farmers got. When the war was over, prices dropped, and farmers stopped planting this marginal land, guess what? The soil was now loose and had nothing to hold it in place. The marginal land plowed during World War 1 mainly consisted of sod and Great Plains grasses that combined to hold the soil in place. This conscious decision to plow the marginal areas of the High Plains is known to historians as the Great Plow-Up. It appeared a complete verification of the greatness of the American Way. And besides, wasn’t the US government telling farmers to plant more? They were making money and being patriotic at the same time. Land that wouldn’t produce a profit during normal times would produce a profit when wheat prices skyrocketed. The High Plains of Wyoming, Colorado, the western Dakotas, eastern Montana, and so forth, were now economically profitable to plow. When wheat prices soared, suddenly, it became profitable for farmers to farm and plant marginal land. Again, market economics supplies the explanation. By themselves, impoverished farmers were not why the Dust Bowl happened.Īnother thing had happened during World War 1. By 1922 or so, hard times had arrived for many people on the Great Plains.īut that wasn’t all. Suddenly, hard times loomed for American farmers. What wasn’t falling, however, was the amount of debt farmers had taken on to buy more machinery and land during the flush times of the war. European demand for American wheat dropped significantly as a result. During the next couple years, the farmland torn up by the war slowly began to produce once more. One is, of course, that Europeans did not stay at war forever. This seems like a perfect endorsement of capitalism and the American Way so far. Please Click Here to Subscribe to My History Blog!Ī motorist attempts to outrun a dust storm in Texas in 1936. Some invested that money in more machinery or in acquiring more land. Another truism of market economics is that when demand for a product gets ahead of supply, prices rise. Wheat will win the war! That’s what Uncle Sam told Great Plains farmers. The US government implored farmers to grow more wheat, especially after the US joined the fighting in 1917. Europeans needed food, and America had the answer. New innovations in farm equipment increased the amount of wheat a farmer could cultivate. The Great Plains seemed a paradise for growing wheat. Grain belts like the plains of Eastern Europe became battlegrounds.Įnter the United States. But, at least in Europe, World War 1 disrupted agriculture badly. ![]() One thing that helps soldiers have high morale is an adequate supply of food. When nations go to war, they want their armies to have high morale. Our explanation begins with market economics. How could war, in Europe, no less, cause dust storms in America? Most historians trace the reasons why the Dust Bowl happened to World War 1. But why is the 1930s THE Dust Bowl? Any event important enough to get its own name requires greater explanation. The 1890s fit that description in some respects. But the weather has been hot, windy, and dry on the Great Plains for years at a time in other decades, too. The reason why the Dust Bowl happened is because the 1930s were hot, windy, and dry on the Great Plains. On the surface, the answer might seem very straightforward. Therefore, understanding why the Dust Bowl happened is well worth our time. Even if one doesn’t go quite as far as I do, no one denies it was a human and environmental catastrophe. Personally, I regard the Dust Bowl of 1930s America as one of the six worst ecological disasters of all time. The question of why the Dust Bowl happened is not merely an academic one. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Some people don't even believe Ping could be a real Dragonkeeper because she's a girl, but she carries all the typical traits of a Dragonkeeper and there's no arguing with destiny. The first big change comes in the way culture is handled. That’s not what Brave New World is about though, with the many effective gameplay tweaks eclipsing the standard additions. There are also eight new wonders, but these too do much the same thing as all other wonders in Civ 5. They’re decent enough but, by the game’s very focus on creating a level field between all players, none of the new civs are particularly revolutionary. "The first big change comes in the way culture is handled. There are nine in total, with two coming from the series’ past (albeit with alternate leaders) and the seven never before seen civilizations to control. As all expansion packs love to throw numbers around, much of the media surrounding Brave New World discusses its new civilizations. Lets get the mediocre stuff out of the way first. Regardless of your opinion on this, the Brave New World expansion restores much of the depth the series had lost in Civ 5, whilst simultaneously retaining a simplicity and elegance that can only come from the most masterful of gameplay designs. Civilization 5 wasn’t the same though, shedding many of the series’ deeper mechanics in favour of simplifying the formula. There was also that time I nearly failed my A levels during a particular Civ 4 addiction, something I won’t forgive Sid Meier for any time soon. Not all noise reacts equally, and I’ve found noise reductions done by camera and lens, don’t necessarily do great at differing rates of focus falloff with varying depth of field coupled with luminosity and color channel gradations. ![]() Along with that, the detail recovery and blur reduction sliders offer a wonderful amount of control and individual customization. This is one area I’ve found other noise reduction software, or my Digital Asset Management program NR to struggle (Light Room and Aperture are the two I’ve used). One really useful and unique slider, especially in the case of this example image, was the “Clean Color” slider (see screen shot below) which eliminated some pretty severe mottling in the reds on the flower petals. As shown above, with a shot taken at ISO 12,800 even, the end result is clean and usable for many applications. Topaz claims that DeNoise can make your ISO 1600 shots look like shots taken at ISO 100, and I have no reason to challenge that, in fact, I’ve found the ability to even get ISO 3200 shots to look remarkably clean with little to no detail loss.
